Round the world, stars have been victims of such painful circumstances. Their untimely death due to addiction triggered health issues again stirs the debate on its peril. Even if the overdose of the substance is unintentional, it proves that no person is immune to addiction or its consequences. A celebrity is at the same risk as any other individual when it comes to substance abuse. It seems as if this addiction is more common in Hollywood, with some rare instances back home in the Bollywood as well.

When there is an addiction, even a celebrity needs treatment like everyone else. They seem to be more vulnerable at times in comparison to an average person.
When famous people develop substance disorders, it’s more due to the environment in which they live and work. Easy availability is also one of the contributing factors here. Overall, these celebrities are surrounded by numerous risk factors like demanding schedules and high-stress environments. Furthermore, no matter how successful they are, a sense of insecurity always exists. The pressure to perform well is continuously there. The expectations of the people are enormous, and the media remain critical to highlight even the smallest mistakes. Anxiety or depression is a natural outcome of such a scenario.
Moreover, self-medication is universal and works as a precursor to addiction. It may relieve stress temporarily but makes the body accustomed to it and starts demanding more of the substance. It starts a dangerous cycle that eventually leads to addiction.

Jim Morrison
James Douglas Morrison was one of the most iconic and influential singers in rock music’s history. A singer, songwriter, and poet, he was the lead vocalist of the band the Doors. In the 1960s, his leather pants and swagger made the fans go crazy. His voice, performances, and his rebellious conduct made him an enduring symbol of the pop culture of those times. He died in 1971 and was thought to have died due to heroin overdose, although no autopsy was performed. This rock star was also a poet who self-published two poetry collections, and his occasional verses during the concerts were a big hit. He was a graduate of the film school at the University of California.
Marilyn Monroe
An American actress, singer, and model, her roles as a blonde character made her the most iconic sex symbols of all time. Her image was symbolic of the changes in society’s attitude towards sexuality. Several conspiracy theories shroud her death. The body of this iconic celebrity was found in her bed on 5th August 1962. A day before, she had complained to the same doctor about her uneasiness and problem in sleeping. It is reported that her death was due to an overdose of sleeping pills. Other theories suggest that she probably committed suicide. The amount of drugs found in her body was much higher than the lethal levels.
Elvis Presley
Elvis Aaron Presley was the true king of rock and roll. He was an American singer and actor, and even today, he is regarded as a cultural icon of the 20th century. He was the best selling solo artist of all time. Near the end of his life, his health had deteriorated significantly. He was bedridden, overweight, and required nursing care. The cause of his death remains debatable. However, a toxicology report revealed that at the time of his death, his body had traces of 10 prescription medications in his body. It included codeine as well, at least ten times the therapeutic level.
Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix remains the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music. He was a guitarist, rock singer and a songwriter. His career lasted only for four years, and within these four years, and cemented his place as the most influential guitarist and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. He was, unfortunately, also known for a history of drug abuse. In his last performance, his exhaustion from drug abuse and the pressure of stardom was evident. He died in 1970 on September 18th as he consumed nine sleeping pills. He found unconscious the next morning and announced dead in the next two hours.
Prince
Prince Rogers Nelson was a multitalented personality. He was a singer, songwriter, musician, producer, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. He is well known for his exuberant stage performances, genre-crossing work, and above all, a versatile voice. He is correctly regarded as the most successful musicians in the history of pop music. He integrated a variety of styles in his singing, and that was his biggest appeal. In his last days, his use of prescription drugs was a concern with both family and friends. In his final days, he was suggested to consult an addiction specialist and join a rehab facility. However, before this could happen, he was found dead due to an apparent drug overdose.
Whitney Houston
Singer and an actress Whitney Elizabeth Houston is known as the most awarded singer in history as well as the best selling artist of all time. She also holds the record of selling 200 million records worldwide, registering herself in the Guinness Book of World Records. She won six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and two Emmy’s. However, she had a history of drug abuse, which she publicly admitted. She died due to drowning, atherosclerotic disease, and cocaine use. Traces of marijuana, Xanax, Flexeril, Benadryl, and cocaine were found in her body, revealed the autopsy.
Amy Winehouse
Amy Jade Winehouse was a famous English singer and songwriter. Her expressive voice and a magical mix of musical genres included blues and jazz. She died in the year 2011 due to an alcohol overdose. She won five Grammy awards in her career. The singer actually suffered from mental illness and had a medical history of it. Her mother wrote a book in 2014, recollecting her daughter’s problems and addictions from a relatively early age like shoplifting, gambling, smoking, and alcohol abuse. Amy Winehouse rejected several attempts for rehab, before choosing to get treated finally. However, she could not gain long term recovery.
Heath Ledger
Actor, photographer and music video director, Heath Andrew Ledger had an illustrious acting career. He started his career in the 1990s, appearing in several Australian television productions. In 1998, he moved to the United States, and further rose in his career by acting in nineteen films. Despite the Academy Award nomination, the actor was addicted to heroin, and eventually, its overdose leads to his death.
In 2007 he was forced to attend rehab. He died on January 22, 2008, in his apartment. His autopsy report stated that he died from prescription drug abuse. His body had the presence of six drugs, including oxycodone, hydrocodone, alprazolam, and temazepam. The combination of these three drugs proved fatal for Heath Ledger.
John Belushi
John Adam Belushi was a comedian, actor, and singer. He was also one the original cast members of comedy show Saturday Night Live on NBC. His illustrious career came of an abrupt end when he died in 1982 due to injecting speedball. It is a combination of cocaine and heroin. The actor made numerous attempts to recover from his drug addiction. He was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel. John Belushi had also starred in Animal House and sang with the band –The Blue Brothers.
Philip Seymour Hoffman
He was an actor, director, and producer with a successful career from the early 1990s to 2014, the year when he died. He played supporting and character roles in various Hollywood movies. He was a good friend of Heath Ledger and frequently counseled him on drug abuse. Hoffman died in his apartment with a syringe in his arm. The reason for this death was an overdose of heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, and benzodiazepines. It was a case of poly-drug intoxication. Interestingly, Hoffman enjoyed 23 years of sobriety and worked with recovering drug addicts. However, after such a long span, he relapsed and returned to rehab in 2013. He has four Academy Awards nominations and won an Oscar for the best actor.
