Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, was started in 1962 and was inaugurated in 1962. After being under the Government of Punjab for a few initial years, in 1966, the administrative control was passed on the Union Territory of Chandigarh in 1966. Today it is an autonomous body functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It has a mission to provide quality patient care, postgraduate medical education, and undertake community-based research.
